Before the change, a few women had been honored-Queen Elizabeth, Wallis Simpson, and Corazon Aquino. It is an annual tradition that dates back to 1927, though it was called Time Man of the Year, until 1999. Time bestows the title on the person who has had the greatest influence on events "for better or worse," said Gibbs. She referred to them as, "something new this year and something very disturbing."
Third place belongs to "The Hackers," according to Gibbs. Of Clinton, Gibbs said she "came closer than any woman ever has to winning the White House, and in the process revealed, I think, both the opportunities and the obstacles that women face in the public square."
Hillary Clinton once again lost out to Trump-she was the publication's second choice for the honor. "When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied expectations, broken the rules, violated norms, beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election that he entered with 100-to-1 odds against him?" she said. Time editor Nancy Gibbs was also on the program, and called the choice, "straightforward." It means a lot," Trump said of the title in a telephone interview on NBC's Today show. Wednesday morning, Time magazine announced President-elect Donald Trump as its 2016 Person of the Year.
